Spelling City Unit 9 - VCCCV Words

This week's spelling words are very difficult.  They all have Vowel-Consonant-Consonant-Consonant-Vowel patterns.  We divided them in to categories and completed Spelling workbook pages 35 and 36 together today for practice.  We will continue to practice during the week.  I would encourage every student to use the Spelling City link to Unit 9 words below to practice at home.

Today we read and practiced the play called The Three Little Cyber Pigs.  Rereading this story is tonight's homework.  We practiced our vocabulary words including many computer words such as virus, delete, laptop, font, graphics, internet browser, and email.  We will also read another story called the Three Little Pigs Revisited.  There are many nursery rhyme characters discussed some in the story.  Here are some funny video clips about the original nursery rhyme characters that walked into Ann's Cybershop:

Steps in a Process Extra Credit

Extra Credit:  We are working to learn "Steps in a Process." Students have been offered a challenge (Bonus) assignment to present a short "Steps in a Process" recipe to the class on Friday.  This helps with fluency and presentation, as well as keeping events in sequence.  Here's a "Cooking for Kids" video that can help to show how steps in a process are important:

Conflict in Stories

Today was our library day.  Students learned how to use the iPads for searching for books in our school's library.

This week's reading skill focused on "Conflict" as we read "On the Banks of Plum Creek" from Laura Ingalls Wilder, author of the Little House on the Prairie series. Students took the vocabulary portion of the test and also summarized the story while focusing on conflict, plot, and resolution.

Tomorrow's reading story is from Little House in the Big Woods by Laura Ingalls Wilder.  The assignment is to reread On the Banks of Plum Creek on pages 159-169 by Laura Ingalls Wilder and prepare for our comprehension and vocabulary test over his historical fiction story.  The Tuesday story sheets are to be returned tomorrow with a parent signature.  Reading out loud is a great way to practice fluency.
