Hewitt Anderson

Tuesday's homework is to reread our Hewitt Anderson story found on pages 466-489 in our Storytown book.  We also completed our vocabulary practice workbook page 102.  Wednesday's story test will be over the vocabulary and the comprehension of this story.  Hewitt Anderson is a folk tale that also contains some tall tale elements.

Hewitt Anderson Vocabulary and Story Practice

This week, students are learning about different kinds of folk tales and trying our hand at writing story webs/idea maps for each kind of folk tale, such as fables, tall tales, and fairy tales.  As the written portion of this unit, students will select one of their story maps and "publish" their favorite for the class.

Just Like Me

Our reading story  is Just Like Me.  We read about different artists and how they created self portraits to express themselves.  We will also be creating self portraits and writing autobiographies.  Students should reread this story tonight for homework.  They may bring in any art supplies that they would like to use to create their self portrait this week.

We studied spelling words with er, ar, and or endings.  We completed Unit 17 workbook pages.

This week we also worked on subject and object pronouns, as well as reflexive pronouns.  Here's a link to explain reflexive pronouns:

Another skill we are learning is Steps in a Process.  Here are some activities you can have your child do at home to practice Steps in a Process:

Steps in a Process Activities

I will begin AIMS testing for fluency for the Winter Benchmark.  It will take a while to get through the entire class before reports are sent home, but we are in the process of completing this test.  Students orally read two probes to me.  Each story "probe" (selection) is a timed one-minute selection.  The goal is to make good progress in fluency (reading rate).
